Thank you all -- Sounds like it does happen, if infrequently. And, yes, it could be an issue on other insurance too but I only take MA and am private pay otherwise.
I do already have a clause in the financial agreement that I have opted out of Medicare and eligible clients are responsible for costs (not that MC would pay an LCPC anyway). Perhaps I need a more explicit clause about MA becoming MC retroactively and that the responsibility reverts to the client to pay.
As a practical matter, I am NEVER going to get the money back from the client! I'm not really covered even if my financial agreement covers it -- it will never be more than a few thousand dollars. Too much for me to lose, but barely enough for collections agencies to touch. And MA/MC clients just don't have the cash.
